Dear Families:
We have eight more school days left! We are all so thankful to all the support from our IGDVS families, students, teachers, and staff. Thank you all for your kindness, flexibility, and patience with the process this year. We are slated to resume full in-person instructions on campus if COVID doesn't overtake Ukiah in mid-August. Our group prayer for all to safely return to campus is necessary. Please take a moment to fill out the re-enrollment form for us so we can plan for the fall. The last day of in-person instruction for K-6 students at the satellite campus is Wednesday, June 2nd. We will have a virtual Teacher's Banquet on June 3rd and Graduation for 6, 8, and 12 graders on June 4th. Have a wonderful and safe summer! Take care,
IGDVS
COTW Fundraiser
COTW is hosting a fundraiser selling tote bags for 15 dollars each.*
Each tote bag is hand-embroidered and designed by our designers for our female education initiative. As students ourselves, we firmly believe that every person deserves an education.
This year, our nonprofit club has dedicated itself to raising funds to help Vivian, a girl from Uganda, receive her education.
Vivian is a determined young lady whose ambition is to be a doctor and help others. She always strives to be on top of her class and is always up for a challenge. It is an honor to support Vivian’s personal and educational growth by providing her tuition, uniforms, school meals, and basic medical care with $552 per year. Especially in the light of the pandemic, education should not be something that is placed on the gambling table.
So, please support us!

Virtue of the Month: Humility
Written by Tessa Jahnke

This month marks our last virtue of the month... humility! Life is a cycle of knowledge and development. Humility is the belief that you don’t have anything special that makes you better than others. A person who is lacking in humility can be described as arrogant, someone who views themselves as better than others. When you have humility, you are able to learn from mistakes and grow. When someone is not willing to recognize their weaknesses and only focuses on being better than others will never be able to progress.
“Greater in battle than the man who would conquer a thousand-thousand men, is he who would conquer just one - himself. Better to conquer yourself than others.” - The Dhammapada
COVID-19 Education
As the COVID-19 pandemic keeps ongoing, it's very important to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of front-line workers. Here are some inspiring quotes from the front-line workers of Denver Health!
"At first I was concerned about bringing the virus home to my family, but I know that I am making a big difference- and I love what I do."- Venus Weddington
"I love working in the COVID area because that gives me the opportunity to tell my patients, 'Okay, I had it and I made it, so you can make it, too.'"- Peggy Christian
"When the pandemic first started, the one thing that really pulled me out of the depths of despair and fear and anxiety was the community support surrounding health-care workers and the thank-you notes written by patients and friends."- Molly Thiesson

Tammy Long is a senior at DVGS.
Question: What was your inspiration for coming to this school? Tammy: My parents recommended this school to me, and I thought it was pretty awesome and it’s worth trying it out. Question: What is your favorite part of IGDVS? Tammy: My favorite part of IGDVS is how every teacher is so dedicated to their work, even if it’s voluntary work. And sometimes when students are naughty and stubborn, they didn’t give up on them, and instead, keep finding ways to help them. Question: What is your favorite school lunch? Tammy: Oh, speaking of food, I love food. I think my favorite dish would be the fried tofu, the tofu sauce with noodles also tasted good, and I like the curry as well as the Vietnamese food~ I like how the kitchen spent so much time on making every delicious dish, with patient and creativity. Question: What is your favorite subject? Tammy: To be honest, my favorite subject is English. I thought English would be tedious since we have to read a lot of texts. However, the experience of English class in IGDVS changed my opinion. The discussions in class were very interesting and inspirational, although sometimes the question is difficult to answer. It is this process that enables me to think deeper and finally discover some insights in life. Question: Do you have any advice for students? Tammy: Be grateful and cherish your time there, it will be the most valuable and irreplaceable memories in your life.
Environmental Article

Gorillas are going extinct due to the loss of forests where gorillas have spent many years living. They are now being destroyed because of agricultural use and commercial logging. 8 years ago, a study was done to predict when gorillas would be extinct, and it was predicted that 90% of their present habitat would be gone by 2030. In less than 10 years, gorillas will almost be extinct. So what can we do about it?
The first thing you can do is be active on social media. Repost, like, and follow resources people know. When buying palm oil, search for sustainable and eco-friendly products. Educate yourself on wildlife; learning more about the conservation of gorillas' natural environment is very important in saving any endangered species.
If you worship a larger step, I recommend recycling cell phones and electronics. Coltan is a rare substance found in electronics such as phones and iPads, and one of the very few places in the world that can be found in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo right in the middle of the gorilla habitat. "Gorillas on the line... answer the call" is an annual Global Mobile phone recycling challenge. Get in contact with them to donate your phone so you can save some gorillas. For more information, please go to gorillafund.org. Use your voice and be mindful of how you affect environments.

Vegan Recipes
Smokey Tofu, Lettuce, and Tomato Sandwich
Ingredients:
For the sandwich -
8 slices of your favorite vegan bread
Smoky Seared Tofu
2 large ripe tomatoes (sliced)
8 green leaf lettuce leaves (washed and dried) (butter lettuce is another fabulous choice)
1/4 cup mayonnaise (vegans use a mayo alternative such as Vegenaise)
Salt & pepper to taste
For the smoky seared tofu -
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 14-ounce block extra-firm tofu, cut in 1/4-inch slices (no need to drain)
Pinch kosher salt
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
2 teaspoons pure maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
Instructions:
Set a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. When hot, add the olive oil. When the olive oil is hot, add the tofu along with a pinch of salt. The tofu will hiss and jump around a bit, so watch out! Cook, flipping occasionally, until golden brown on both sides, 8-10 minutes. While the tofu cooks, mix the soy sauce, pure maple syrup, and smoked paprika in a small bowl. When the tofu is done, reduce the heat to low and pour the mix over the top. Cook, flipping occasionally, until the sauce has reduced and thickened, about 1 minute. Transfer the smoky seared tofu to a plate. Toast the bread then smear each piece with mayonnaise, as little or as much as you like - 2 teaspoons to 2 tablespoons or so. Top four pieces of bread with tomatoes; sprinkle with a touch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the tofu, then pile with the lettuce. Top with remaining slices of bread. Cut in half and serve.

Crafts To Do at Home
Pop-up Cards:
Making a card and writing a letter to your mother is one of the ways to show your love and appreciation to your mother.
Cut a piece of card stock to the desired size.
Next, fold the card stock in half. Cut two parallel slits in the center on the folded side of the paper, about one inch apart and about one inch long, or to your preferred length.
Open up the card and push out the slits that you cut.
Take another card stock or color paper, fold it in half, and glue it behind the card that you just cut.
Then, draw any type of image or cut some shapes on a separate piece of paper and stick it to the slits that pop up when you open your card.
Decorate both the inside and outside of your card
Lastly, but most importantly, write a heartfelt letter to your mother to show your gratitude to her!
