COVID-19 Education

Written by Katherine Wang There has been a lot of news recently about vaccines, and the first round of vaccines was given already to many healthcare workers. There are several approaches to developing a vaccine for COVID-19. Live-Attenuated Vaccines: Live vaccines use a weakened form of the germ that causes the disease. These vaccines are very similar to the natural infection that they are trying to prevent, so they create a strong immune response and can last for years. Inactivated Vaccines: Inactivated vaccines use the killed version of the germ that causes the disease, and they cause an immune response but not infection. However, these types of vaccines don't provide as much protection as live vaccines, and may not last for as long. Genetically Engineered Vaccines: Genetically engineered vaccines use genetically engineered RNA and DNA that prompt an immune response to the virus. However, there are some challenges to developing a vaccine for COVID-19.

  • Vaccine Safety: Vaccines may have undesirable side effects or damage other parts of the body and cause complications, so further research is needed to ensure the safety of humans.

  • Long-term Protection: There is a belief that after you get COVID-19 once, it's impossible to get it again- however, this is not true. It is possible to get COVID-19 after you've already gotten it, even though the risk of death is much lower and it only happens in a fraction of people. Therefore, an effective COVID-19 vaccine needs to be able to prevent further infection.

  • Protecting Elderly People: People over the age of 50 are at more risk for COVID-19 and often have more severe symptoms than younger people. Additionally, they don't respond as well to vaccines, so an ideal vaccine would provide more protection for elderly people

Even though the path to finding a vaccine for COVID-19 is certainly a difficult process, many people are working toward it and several vaccines have already been tested and have gained approval from the FDA with excellent efficacy and mild side effects in general. The coronavirus will not last forever, and better times are ahead!

Student Interviews

By Emily (Zixin) Tan

Ashley Dong What is your earliest memory? A: I am not very clear, but the earliest memory should be around three years old.

What is the happiest day in your life? A: I really want to perform on the school stage. I participated in the chorus of a school New Year's party. Maybe no one noticed me, but I was really happy. What do you think is your weakness? A: I can say a lot about future plans, but I will not finish them all. I need to persist and stay awake, because sometimes I get lost. What pet do you have? A: When I was young, I raised two goldfish. My family does not allow me to keep pets, but I really want to keep pets. If you can live again, when can you? A: I hope to go back to when I was 6 years old.

Kirsten Chen

If you could change one thing in your past, what might that be? K: Something I would change from my past is probably my grades, I give up really easily like if I can’t open a jar I just like give it to my sister so that she can open it, so yea I should try harder and try not to give up. What do you dislike most about yourself? K: I dislike my personality, let me explain, I think of myself as a very kind person but also very selfish, I can also be very judgy and most people don’t like me because of it, I try to change but it doesn't exactly work. I kind of have mixed personalities you know?? Well yeah, I have the kind personality and fun one and I have the selfish, ignorant one. What do you like most about your friends? K: I love all of my friends and they all are very different in their own way, my best friend is funny, kind, and I love her because she understands me, I have the other crazy friend who loves to party and always makes me have fun, and more, Emily because she understands me and I can talk to her about stuff that I couldn’t talk about with my friends. What are you most proud of? K: I am most proud of my sense of style, years ago I hated my style and was super bad at it but then this year in quarantine, it helped me find new hobbies like new clothes and how to pair them with, I think my style is ok and I like it! Where do you see yourself in 5 years? K: I see myself graduating high school and enjoying my life with my friends and family.
